The truth is still, very much, out there
A good few months ago now, a friend of mine said “hey, did you know that they’re making a new X Files movie?” and, indeed, I did not know. I was pretty surprised though especially considering how the series ended. You wouldn’t think there would be much scope for a new movie in the main mythology of the X Files. But, alas the rumour has turned out to be true and the new movie is due for release on August 1st this year.
By all accounts this new movie will be much more of a stand-alone story than the first movie, which served as a kind of bridge between seasons 5 and 6 of the TV series. This might piss off a few die-hard fans but will more than likely prove more profitable on the whole because it will mean that people who aren’t familiar with the whole 9 year story arc won’t be alienated, if you’ll excuse the pun. Indeed, it’s only recently that I’ve gotten into the major arc episodes with me purchasing all the DVD box sets. The “Monster of the Week” episodes were always more up my street because I couldn’t always be at home to watch the latest episodes so I missed out on some of the subtle nuances of the arc.
So what will the plot actually be? Well, that is pretty shrouded in secrecy at this point. Chris Carter has only gone as far as to confirm that it will, indeed, be a MOTW type story but will be set in the correct time-line (6 years after “The Truth“). What has also been confirmed, though, is that our two favourite FBI agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully will be returning, played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Also confirmed as being in the movie are Billy Connoly, Amada Peet and (Worryingly) Xzibit… No mention of Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) though. This could mean that revelations regarding his fate in the final episode of the series could surface.
There have been no official trailers to date and the first official poster only hit a couple of days ago. I am super excited though as The X Files remains my favourite ever TV series. I really hope, though, that they don’t make it entirely stand-alone because it would seem like a bit of a middle finger to the fans who are, frankly, expecting answers. What happened to Skinner? Can the final invasion be stopped? Will we ever see Mulder and Scully’s baby, William again and if so will his significance finally be fully revealed? Did Rayes and Doggett Fight to re-open the X-Files? All that aside though, I am truly happy that the agents are being given another outing as the final 2 seasons weren’t their finest hour. (Don’t get me wrong, I liked them but they were no season 5!)
I’ll definately be keeping my finger on the pulse with this one though and be sure to post any significant updates I find. Until then…. Stay geeky!

As if it was seeking me out… the URL to a bootleg teaser trailer landed in my lap today. It’s a dodgy camera job but boy does it get the juices flowing.

I love the X Files, but for some reason I don’t think I ever saw the last 2 seasons. I’ve got the first season on DVD and I’m hoping to get them all so I can watch every episode.
I’m glad Mulder and Scully will be back in the movie though – I can’t wait to see it!

@ Emz
The last two seasons were something of an oddity. The last episode in season 7 was called “Requiem” implying it would be the last ever and indeed it ended in such a way (Mulder being abducted for knowing what he knew). But instead, they carried on and introduced two new characters, John Dogget and Monica Rayes. Where they kinda failed is when you replace long loved characters you better pull off something really special and they didn’t really. I did grow to like Dogget and Rayes but never as much as Mulder and Scully. That’s why this new film is so damned exciting!

Hmmm, TBH I think the majority of people would have lost interest in the XFiles now…
It’s like hmm.. besides all the other films have been total shite!

There’s only been one… and it was pretty good if you consider that it was actually a part of the TV series.

This is actually news to me.
I thought the X-Files had stopped long ago, used to watch it all the time when it was aired on BBC. (before I got cable) Now I never watch it.. LOL
It’s great to hear David is returning and Billy always makes me laugh so that’s a plus, to think I’d never of heard this without checking your blog. (which is very cool btw) I’ll have to go check IMDB

P.s I wasn’t much keen on X-Files after david left it.
