Review – Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (15)
Directors: Colin Strause, Greg Strause
Starring: Steven Pasquale, Reiko Aylesworth
When I saw the HD trailer for AVP:R a few months back I was so excited, I swear I peed a little. Over the months that followed I learned more about the story and remained quite excited. After all, it looked, from the trailer, to be the film that we wanted the first time around, i.e. with the gore we wanted. It also had glimpses of James Cameron’s classic Aliens in that the creatures had the ridges in their heads as seen in the 1986 sequel.
What I got last night however was not at all what I’d hoped for. It started out as fairly standard fare; introduce a few characters, set the scene for the aliens and predators fight and explore the location a little but after that the film never really got going. I can see exactly why it went wrong. The brothers Strause who directed it were obvious fans of both franchises, and rightly so, but rather than come up with an imaginative story or premise for the film they just strung together features that they liked about the other films and wove them through a story that seems to have been written by a six year old.
Seriously, the list of things wrong with this movie could go on forever but I’ll summarise: I couldn’t tell you a single one of the characters’ names without looking at IMDB, that’s how unmemorable they were. The whole film was far too dark, I couldn’t tell what was going on and who was fighting who. The “Predalien”, if you’ll pardon my french, was a fucking joke. Aliens and predators are classic movie monsters with more than enough of a following to sustain a film. Creating a third, super-monster was completely unnecessary. Some of the predalien’s abilities were utter garbage as well. For example, it could impregnate victims with multiple alien embryos, none of which looked like the asexual offspring of the predalien… they were just normal, bog standard warrior aliens. Daft. The sound of the aliens dying consisted of one borrowed and hugely overused sound effect which sounded more like an elephant being hit with a tranquiliser dart. Finally, I don’t want to give anything away but the ending was rubbish, very abrupt and with little or no build-up and the “twist”, if you want to call it that, pissed me off so bad I could barely contain myself.
Just coming back to the main villain, the predalien (God, I hate saying that), whoever designed that obviously had very little understanding of the mythology that came with Aliens. It is understood that warrior aliens do take on some of the physical characteristics of their hosts but there was always a limit and the alien always looked more Xenomorph than host. This ridiculous creature blows that right out of the water. It’s just a predator with pipes in its back, a tail and no eyes! It doesn’t even have acidic blood, a trait we’ve seen passed down to even the most diluted alien specimen in Alien Resurrection. This being the case I feel that “predalien” is the wrong word entirely for this creature. A name far more suitable would be “The Alienator”.
As the name suggests, this will probably be the last we see of this crossover franchise and I can’t say I’m sad to see it go. Even at their low points the franchises did far better on their own than they ever did together. If someone is ballsy enough to attempt this again and, indeed if a studio is ballsy enough to give such a project the green light, I hope they have a damned good story and some decent characters because AVP:R sure as shit didn’t.

I thought it was rubbish too.
Although I am a bit biased on that opinion, as I dislike sci-fi completely, and the first Predator film (which is the only other, Alien, Predator or AVP film I have seen), didn’t really impress me either; considering how much everyone bangs on about it being a leg-end.
Probably my youth showing up there, because I didn’t see Predator until the other week, thats over two decades since it’s release. And as I say, I dislike Sci-fi.
Even though I am not an Alien/Predator geek, and I know nothing about the history of the films, I still thought AVP:R was shite.

P.S
Cloverfield looks amazing.
I love the camera and editing styles/techniques used on the trailer, really effective!

Third and final post I promise!
I realise I just contradicted myself big style by saying I dislike Sci-fi (alot), and then saying that Cloverfield looks amazing.
But it actually does look good, so they have done bloody well already to make the film appeal to a Sci-fi hater.
Something which AVP:R did not do.
And I also just realized you have a Cloverfield entry Dan, so feel free to remove/move my off-topic ramblings in here

And that is why you’re my number 1 reader!
Yes, it was poor, very poor. Cloverfield looks proper, stonkin, suck-me-off good though and for Empire to give it 5 stars it has to be soemthing special.
Jolly good!

Well, ok I’m gonna see avp 2 later, I’m not expecting much just brawls and lot of’um
though Dan I must say stop hating on the predalien, it wasn’t created just for the film its been around for years, it was a playable character in avp2 the game (2001) and its what the fans were looking forward to in avp 1. though i must agree that having no acid blood is a bit disturbing… any way I think the problem with the films is that they are made by dicks, pure and simple, if the graphic artists and writers who have made avp graphic novels and novels over the years got together I think we would be less disappointed, anyway I’ll post back when I’ve see it.

What the Predalien was created for is irrelevant. It still sucked in this movie mainly because of it’s looks and behaviour. If it was just a really strong alien with mandibles it would have been better. As it was, it was too far removed from both creatures’ mythologies to be successful. What works in a game rarely works in a film (See pretty much every game to film adaptation for proof).
When I think of the predalien, I think of a super-strong, super-agile alien that doesn’t look so different from the alien warriors born of human hosts. It’s main strength would be a heightened proficiency towards strategic hunting and perhaps an ingrained compulsion to collect trophies.

You’d be right on the mark there, the Predalien is supposed to be a beast. It couldn’t climb walls but it didn’t need to, it had all the smarts and strength of a Predator but the agile and jumpiness of an Alien. But I’ll judge the film’s version at 8, I’ll be looking to see if the character designers have actually thought about the design and if the creature would work in the real world.

Have not seen it but was planning to. Might give it a miss now! I’ll probably rent it out in a couple of months just to watch it. Nice review, enjoyed reading it.
