If you’re an iPhone user then you’ve probably at least heard about the Tesco clubcard app. The simple app displays a scannable barcode that you can use instead of your full sized wallet clubcard or mini, car keys version. Great, right? Well yeah, for what it’s worth it’s pretty good (even though it only scans on the newest in-store barcode readers). But I think they’ve missed several tricks that would have made it an absolute blinder of an app.

Having the app installed is no more handy than having a clubcard attached to your keys, in fact the process of finding the app, tapping it and waiting for it to load makes it marginally less handy. The beauty of smartphones is that they are two-way media. You can both send and receive information on the fly. Because of this, Tesco could, and should, implement the following features:

The ability to check your points balance from the app. EDIT: Literally the day after I posted this, Tesco released version 2.1 of the app that now allows the user to check points balance.

Special, app only offers and coupons delivered to the screen in the form of scannable barcodes.

The ability for customers to redeem their points balance in the form of a clubcard voucher on the screen.

The ability to pass points vouchers directly from the app to the tesco online store. (may only be possible in iPhone OS 4. I’m no expert)

These features, although not groundbreaking, would take a half decent app and make it outstanding. Chances are it would be fairly expensive to implement the infrastructure for these features but once it’s in place there’s no reason it has to be limited to iPhone users. Android and Windows mobile could have apps and even a simple mobile site could provide the same functionality to other phones. Low end phone users could even have the info and offer codes texted to them.

Although I’ve singled out Tesco, any outlet with a loyalty card system could jump on this bandwagon and improve the experience for all customers. So bloody get on with it!

Well maybe book is a bit ambitious. Perhaps one day it could become a book but for now I’d settle for any kind of published media. I could do it on this blog but I’d like to keep this focused on movies and some tech. Also once it’s finished I don’t want it to become buried in other content as and when I publish it. So maybe a new website all together…

What the hell kind of book would you write!? I hear you ask. You see, I’m a cynical fucker. I make observations of the world’s shortcomings that people with a normal brain wouldn’t notice or ever care about. In a way I’m the bitter old bastard that yells at kids for doing something that affects him in no way what so ever. I see problems and annoyances where others don’t. So the “book” would be a sort of Clarksonesque indictment of the world as I see it. I think I’d split it up into chapters based on what I was talking about (the web, TV, movies, people etc.) however, seeing as it will more than likely be a website, I’m thinking of doing something along the lines of an art-directed blog. Sort of like how Sam Hardacre and Greg Wood and Jason Santa Maria do it with each “article” being styled in such a way that it would compliment the theme and subject.

Exactly how I’d execute it is still up for debate. I don’t intend on having comments open so maybe I could hard code the lot. That, however would present the problem of it requiring quite a lot of tinkering each time I posted a new page. Ollie Kavanagh’s Hip Hop Quoted site seems to do exactly what I’m after and it’s built on WordPress (win) but what that dude’s development skills make me look proper retarded. It’s all a learning curve, though and I think I’ll get there one way or the other. Maybe this will help… If you have any resources to share or tips that will help me cut my art direction teeth then please get in touch.

As for web standards, the site will be highly experimental. It will take much inspiration from the Sam Brown school of thought and will include fancy CSS3, HTML5 and browser specific pretties that mean it will not look the same in every browser. (Read: if you use IE you’ll probably be shit outta luck.)

I’ve often thought about why movies are so important to me. Why do I love the cinema more than most other people? To this day I couldn’t tell you with 100% certainty why this is the case but I can give you my best guess. It’s the town where I lived in Canada until I was 9. More specifically the local movie theatre, the Forest Kineto theatre. This little one-screen theatre holds some of my fondest childhood memories. I saw some of my all-time favourite movies there. The Back to the Future trilogy, E.T, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the list goes on and on. I went pretty often with my parents and my sister, mainly because it was 5 minutes away from home and because it was so cheap. To this day the ticket price is just $5 Canadian, about £2.

Thinking about that little theatre made me realise just how great small town local cinemas are. It’s a damn shame that all but a very scant few have been driven out of business by the 30 screen multiplexes run by massive international companies. That’s not to say I don’t like big cinemas. I’ll still enjoy seeing a movie there. The comfort and grandeur you get there is pretty much impossible to replicate at the small town theatre. Also, because of the massive amounts of screens they have you get a lot of variety. What you lose, however in the mass of sumptuous padded, reclining seats, choice of 12 movies and £6 family size troughs of popcorn is something greater and far more important than all that. Character.

Stories like what happened to the York Odeon just make me sad. That place had character by the bucket load and was one of the best cinemas I’ve ever been to. An old style picture house where deep red curtains revealed what seemed to be a huge screen and the seating was laid out in a classic arc. Odeon closed this great cinema in 2006 in order to, no doubt, rake in bigger profits from a nearby multiplex. Thankfully, however, this year Reel, a small cinema company, bought the building and re-opened! Unfortunately stories like this are the exception to the rule.

In my opinion, character counts for a lot. It counts for more than the latest 13.1 Dolby Digital jizz-in-your-pants sound or HD, super mega hyper 3D picture. That stuff is all well and good but the places that have it are sterile, soulless cash-cows. They’ve lost sight of what the true nature of the movie theatre is. It’s not about having the biggest dick the best technology and most expensive seats. It’s about the enjoyment of going out and seeing a movie on a big screen, with other movie lovers. Nothing more, nothing less. Smaller cinemas with classic character enhance this experience better than any lavish luxury or cutting edge audio/video technology ever could.

I think it says a lot about society that theatres which totally drown out all sense of personality and community are so successful. Have we become so anti-social that we need cinemas that are kitted out like 5 star hotels to distract us from the fact we’re watching the movie in a room with other people? I thought that was the whole point… Truth be told, if I had the choice between paying £7 for a fully air-conditioned, amphitheatre style multiplex cinema ticket or £7 for a cozy, classic style theatre complete with the smell of stale popcorn and the great feeling of community like I remember from the Kineto, Odeon and Showcase would see a lot less of my money.

Personal post time! It’s been a long time coming, mainly because I’m not very interesting, but now I’ve got a bunch of good stuff to write up. Over the last few months I’ve been up to a whole bunch of stuff! I’ve been on holiday (well, short break), I’ve been to Santa Pod for Jap Show and most important of all; Nat and I have got our first proper place together!!

In May, Nat and I took a drive down to Torquay, Devon for a short sea-side holiday. I hadn’t been on any kind of holiday since Canada in 2005 so, believe me, I was bloody ready! Although it was only a short break, it was excellent. Like I said, we drove down and we actually made really good time; just over 3 hours. Because we knew we were going to be moving shortly after, we decided to make it a cheap one. With that in mind we stayed in the Torquay Travelodge – walking distance from the sea front – for only £32 a night! This left us with way more money to go and see sights, have a nice meal or two out and just be able to enjoy ourselves a lot more.

While on the subject of eating out I actually fulfilled one of my life goals while down there; to eat at a Michelin starred restaurant. On our second night we booked a table at Number 7 Fish Bistro. (Excellent restaurant, terrible website) We knew from the get-go that we wanted to have an exceptionally nice dinner one night but we never imagined it would be Michelin dining! I had fillet of sea bass with seared scallops and Nat had loin of cod with tempura scallops and prawns. We had starters (Grilled garlic mushrooms) and deserts (sticky toffee pudding with local clotted cream) too. best meal I’ve ever eaten. Hands down.

Aside from the excellent food, the rest of the holiday was great too. Relaxing on the beach, eating ice cream by the harbour front and cheesy 2p machines in Paignton. It was a really nice time and we hope to go more often, possibly to Cornwall.

So shortly after we got back from the holiday we found our new home. We decided to do a whole bunch of house viewings in one day and one of the first ones we saw, a 2 bed semi on Broadmeadows, really grabbed us and we decided to go after it straight away. It’s really perfect for us with a nice sized living room, very nice, modern kitchen and two double bedrooms. The garden is a decent size too, perfect for barbecuing.

We had family and friends over for a housewarming party the other week and that was great. As well as getting all the family together, our friends got to see our new house. Even Reedy came down from Sheffield which was ace! I hadn’t seen him in over a year.

At the time of writing this we’ve been in the house a month and it’s working out really well. The big modern kitchen has made me really enjoy cooking again where in the old house the kitchen was really old and small I didn’t want to be in it. In the new place I’d say it’s the place we spend most time. The ultimate bonus, though was the fact that we were allowed to keep our kitteh, Juno. She’s settled into the new neighbourhood with ease and, after coming back with battle scars the first night, has found her place amongst the local cats. Oh yeah! After a few weeks in the house the drama kicked off! just around the corner from us, someone got their house firebombed! See the smoke pictures!

Most recently, then, I went to the JapShow at Santa Pod raceway. It’s been a while since I’ve been there so I jumped at the chance to head down there for a weekend with the boys. We saw some amazing shit while there and I’m tellin ya, there must have been some crazy technological advancements in the last couple of years because the pro cars were achieving times that were unheard of when I was there before. A drag modded Skyline GTST was running quarter miles in the mid 7s at over 170 mph!! The highlight for me though was seeing the brand new Nissan GTR. If you haven’t seen one, check out the photos below. There were two stock ones and then a lightly modded one with a carbon fibre bonnet and they were all stunning. The car, though not called a Skyline, continues the Skyline tradition of insane power and performance for very little money. The new GTR costs £65,000 ish but is easily faster than plenty of cars that come in at twice that price.

Anyway… what else should I talk about..? Oh yeah! The new iPhone! I’ve made my mind up that I will definitely be getting one of these bad boys as soon as my Orange contract is up. I’m not just moving to get the new iPhone either. Orange signal is absolutely terrible in the new house. I get no bars downstairs and only 1 or 2 bars upstairs. Nat, who’s on O2 gets full signal throughout the house. So yeah, roll on iPhone 3G-S

So that’s pretty much everything. I’ll try and stay more current in future so to avoid super long war and peace posts like this. Ta ta!

I’ve always been fairly good with money. I very rarely impulse buy and feel a cold sweat come over me if I dip into my agreed overdraft. One area of personal finance where I do fall down, however is organisation. I’m pretty terrible at setting budgets and savings targets and use my debit card to pay for things waaaay more often than I should. So, with a house move imminent, and the bad taste of a card fraud/bank fuck-up still in my mouth, I thought it was about time I got myself into check with the whole thing and began a search for a free personal finance management app.

A quick search on Google revealed that Mint appeared to be the most popular choice. One problem; it’s only available in the US. There are UK alternatives though such as Wesabe and Kublax which, as far as visuals go, look pretty nice. They’re web based, too so you can log into them from anywhere. The problem I had with these services is that they all work in the same way; that is they access your bank via your online banking details and compile a list of your account activity. I wasn’t interested in this. I would much rather enter my own data into the system because, although the link to my bank would guarantee accuracy, entering my own details and forcing myself to do so would give my organisational skills a workout, the reason I wanted to do this in the first place. Another problem with those services was that you obviously have to set up an account (yeah, another in addition to the million or so web service accounts I already have). So with this in mind I had my requirements:

Web based to be edited from any PC or iPhone.

Manual data input.

Preferably no need to set up yet another account.

Pleasant UI without too many unnecessary features.

Then it occurred to me. Google Docs! I could use Google Docs to set up a spreadsheet to list incoming and outgoing funds as well as add up all my income and expenditure and give me a closing/opening balance. It would only have the fields I needed and could be accessed from anywhere, even from an iPhone/iPod Touch. Best of all, I can use my existing Google Mail account to log into it as well as share the document with anyone who may need to add to it such as family members or my girlfriend.

With this in mind I set about creating a workbook. I found the Google Docs interface really easy to use and it was pretty quick as well. As a test of concept I logged in on my iPod Touch and was really pleased with the interface. It was simple and nicely executed (see right). This really was looking like a very good option for managing my finances or any figures for that matter.

So how have I actually done it? Well I’ve set up a simple table with the following fields:

Item (what is being paid for / paid in)

Category (Household, motoring, personal purchase etc..)

Credit Amount (Amount being paid in)

Debit Amount (Amount being paid out)

Date

Where/Who (Who the transaction is with)

Paid by (Method of payment; Cash, Direct Debit etc.)

These fields are added up using a simple SUM formula and are summarised at the bottom in the form of “Opening balance”, “Total in”, “Total out” and “Closing balance”. I have set up rules so that if either opening or closing balance is less than £0.00 it appears bold in red and if it is above £0.00 it appears in green.

And that’s it. Whenever I buy anything or pay a bill I add a line to the table and I make a new table for each calendar month. The process of doing this enforces my organisation and leaves me with a clear record of where my money has been spent each month. As of now I have only used my spreadsheet with dummy data. I’ll start the first spreadsheet on my next pay day to save the hassle of trawling through bank statements to get historical data.

If you’re interested in having a copy of this workbook for yourself, email me or @ reply me on Twitter and I’ll get one to you.

When designing a site, obviously a major consideration, at each stage should be your target audience. This isn’t a new idea, it’s the same for any kind of media be it audio, video web or print. Only with the web, however is user interaction something that must be thought through carefully with regards to your target audience. Different people use the web in different ways. I’m not just talking about people with disabilities or people of different genders. Being tech savvy or non-tech savvy can have a massive impact on the way in which users will interact with the site and this, of course, will have knock on effects in terms of repeat visits and those all important money-making conversions. The fact that users may not, and probably will not, know as much about using the internet as you do is something that I think gets overlooked too often.

Having worked in technical support for over 6 years I have gotten to see first hand how people perceive and use the Internet. You’ll get people who understand it, who know what a browser is and what a web site is and maybe, some rudimentary understanding of the way the web works… if you’re lucky, and others who just don’t get it. If you’re reading this then I guess you fall into the first category. Congratulations! You’re easy to make websites for. Your needs are clear and you can accomplish calls to action quickly because you know what you’re doing. It can be safely assumed that you meet the minimum computer/web literacy levels required to make full use of the sites you visit. No such assumption can be made for the latter group.

Designers and developers need to think long and hard about how their site/app will be handled by the kind of people who say things like “Have you got the Internet on your computer?” because you can never know how much they really understand. They’ll probably only know just enough to muddle along, to turn on their computer “Open up the Internet” and go to popular sites like eBay, YouTube and facebook (If they haven’t thrown a massive hissy fit and left upon seeing the new layout). These people’s surfing habits are based on routine. Anything they’re not expecting can be instantly met with confusion and even hostility, neither of which are good for business. The following measures can potentially save you a lot of hassle and make you a lot more money.

Make the user feel secure and at ease. – Internet users these days are paranoid about security because the media and IE bombard them with security warnings and scare tactics. Unfortunately these users don’t understand enough to know what’s trustworthy and what isn’t. Be as brief and concise as you can in your copy and use nice calming colours like light blues and greens to make the user feel at ease. Do not, however, try to incorporate whale song or any sounds, for that matter. They’ll just piss people off.

Make it easy for them to find out their password. – People forget passwords, as sure as death and taxes. Make sure you provide them a very obvious means of getting hold of their password should this happen. If the user has to think about how to get their password back, chances are they won’t bother. They’ll leave and never come back.

Don’t surprise them. – As I mentioned above, people’s browsing habits are based on routine. If your site has an unorthodox navigation or even scrolls sideways instead of up and down, bang! You just lost a chunk of potential users. I’m not saying don’t push the boundaries, just know when not to. If your site will be used by the general (non-tech) public, stick to the time honoured easily recognisable layouts and navigation. This means sticking to a width that doesn’t exceed about 980px for those 1024×768 resolution users. Case in point: Look how many people got pissed off with the new Facebook layout… Come on, you know one of them!

Hold their hand if they want it. – If a user doesn’t understand what to do next they might just leave the site, there’s no real way around that. You can give yourself a fighting chance, however, by providing clear, obvious links to some help. If a form they filled in doesn’t validate, make sure it’s clear why this is the case and offer a bit of assistance in the form of a “What’s this?” link to some help text. Careful though, make sure this isn’t visible all the time as it may be seen as patronising to more web-literate users. Something like ClueTip can provide this functionality and also look awesome!

Make sure they see the call to action immediately. – This one kind of goes without saying but it’s amazing how many sites there are out there that are trying to sell something but don’t make it clear right off the bat what they’re actually selling, or how to buy it. Make your call to action stand right out and shout “This is what we’re offering and this is how you get it!” As a rule I like to make sure that no scrolling is required for the call to action to be visible. Check out Silverback to see this done very well indeed.

Provide a version that works in IE6 *takes cover*. – There is still a large user-base for that god-awful browser and as much as it pains me to say it I think we still do need to provide at least limited support for it. It tends to be the non-techies and corporate network PCs that are still using IE6 which, puts them smack bang in the middle of the user group I’m talking about here. Remember: This version can be lo-fi. There’s no problem with it looking less pretty, it just has to work the same. Massive banners that say “YOU’RE USING AN OLD BROWSER. UPGRADE NOW” help no one and may just put people off because it’s starting their experience on a negative.

All of these things will contribute to users, not only completing a call to action, but to them wanting to come back and do it all over again. Happy users = Happy client = Happy bank manager = Happy you.

One area where these guidelines will really pay off is when you are constructing a corporate intranet. People’s jobs may require them to use the site so getting fed up and leaving isn’t an option for them. More to the point, if they complain to their superiors that the site sucks you’re a lot more likely to get it in the neck, not something you want to have to deal with.

Of course this is only the start. You can follow all these guidelines to the best of your ability and still come a cropper. For this reason it is crucial to invest some time in usability testing. You can do this in a way that costs nothing (observing friends and family using the site) or in a way that costs a fortune (hiring a usability testing company such as ClearLeft) but, no matter what, do it and make sure your client knows you’re doing it.

Have you designed a site where you’ve come up against an unusual usability hurdle? have you built a site for users with an extremely low level of computer literacy? I’d love to hear your side of this so be sure to drop a comment.

I was late getting into skateboarding. I only realised I really liked it around 1998 so by the time Hating Life was released in 1999 I was all over it. The video was a collection of UK skaters on various teams and was more a promo than a full-blown video production. Still, it featured some amazing sections from some UK skaters, such as Mark Baines, that are still killing it ten years later.

By far, though, the best section on the video has to be from little known British skater Mike Manzoori. So check out the video below… oh, and turn your speakers up too, The music is, as it happens, one of my favourite songs. Enjoy.

Oh, and while I think about it, here are some links to a few other video sections that I watched over and over again.

Last week I decided to take Thursday and Friday off work so Nat and I could have a nice 4 day weekend together. Not done it in a while and because Nat works on Saturday evenings we don’t tend to have much of a weekend together. Also, as it was both of our pay days on Friday we figured it would be a good time to do it.

Thursday we just had a lazy day and watched a lot of telly. We went for some lunch at spoons and then I went and had my hair cut. It’s now the shortest it’s been for over a year. I just got totally fed up of it being in my eyes. With plans of going to Sheffield the next day we decided to continue to take it easy and stayed in watching movies all evening.

Friday we got up nice and early and headed out to Meadowhall. For those not aware, Meadowhall is a large shopping mall on the outskirts of Sheffield. It was once the largest of it’s type but that’s no longer true. Still, it’s pretty impressive and worth a visit. First store we went in was the Apple Store to look at the shiny objects of desire. In there I saw an old man talking to a member of sales staff about an iMac he was thinking of buying. It was funny but at the same time I felt sorry for the guy. He clearly had zero comprehension of computers, even ones as simple to use as Macs. I just got thinking that the guy would probably be so much happier living out his remaining years in ignorance than going through the stress of learning something as fundamental as using a computer at that age. It’s true that you become less and less able to learn new skills the older you get and at that guy’s age I couldn’t imagine wanting that extra stress… I’d want a life of leisure.

After some wandering around Meadowhall, we headed, via tram (Taking advantage of free parking) into Sheffield city centre. We grabbed some quick pub lunch and headed down devonshire street to some cool shops in The Forum. In one of the shops, the name of which escapes me, Nat found a white 8mm Tunnel, something she’d been looking for for a long time. I also bought her an awesome robot necklace and some spotty earrings that she liked… because I’m nice In another shop Nat bought me a rubber duck because of my current home’s lack of a shower. After some more wandering around in the city we decided we wanted to head back to Meadowhall to close out our day. Nat bought some clothes from H&M and I took advantage of HMV’s pretty decent 3 DVDs for £20 offer and bought Superbad, Death Sentence and The Bourne Ultimatum. I was pretty stoked to finally get the third in the Bourne Trilogy and, because I’d heard some good things about Death Sentence I thought it’d be a good chance to pick it up. After some more wandering around we grabbed a coffee at Starbucks and rested our feet before heading home. On the way back we picked up some wine to sit in front of the TV with. After watching The Friday Night Project and Balls of Steel we hit the hay.

Saturday, Nat had work at 4 and left my house around half past one. I decided I was gonna watch movies. I started with Death Sentence. I thought it was pretty good although I don’t agree with some people who said it was better than The Brave One. After that I watched The Bourne Ultimatum which I haven’t seen since I watched it at the cinema. I enjoyed that as much as I remember and the scene at Waterloo Station, in particular was excellent. Classic Bourne. After that I was pretty damn hungry so decided to get my Dominoes Pizza on. It must have been my lucky day because when the girl behind the counter called my ticket number she handed me, not the one large pizza I ordered, but TWO large pizzas and two side dishes!! Weighing up the fact that the second pizza would have just gone to waste I gave it back to her but kept the side dishes which turned out to be a portion of potato wedges and a portion of Belgian waffles. Good times. When I got home I ate my pizza and sat down to watch Jurassic Park 2… After that i watched a little more TV before heading to bed to watch Superbad followed by One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest followed by V for Vendetta.

On Sunday Nat came over about 12 and we went out for some dinner at The Peacock. They have some good roast dinners there and boy, do you get a lot. I must have been starving because I cleared my plate. No easy feat considering how much you get. To avoid a closed road, we went back home a different way along a nice country road. Just before re-joining the A38 we went past what was possibly the weirdest thing I’d seen all weekend… in fact, all week. Stood at the side of the road beside his car (Remember this is the middle of nowhere) was a man playing the bagpipes. Of all the activities one could partake in while at the roadside, playing the bagpipes is about the least likely. Completely random. We chilled out for a bit letting our dinner settle before going to visit my mum. While we were there the first lightning of the year hit. I love lightning storms, I find them fascinating. That’s about it. A very relaxing but fun weekend.

Last night Nat and I went out for dinner. We went to a place that I haven’t been to in well over a year, something I felt great shame for. You see, since my first visit when I was about 16 this place has been the be all and end all when it comes to proper food as far as I’m concerned. Half way through yesterday I craved steak and I knew some reheated, overcooked excuse for a steak from Wetherspoons was never going to cut the mustard. I needed a proper steak, a 24oz beast, cooked to perfection. I needed Denby Lodge Steak House.

Located out in the sticks in, tiny, Denby Village, Derbyshire, Denby Lodge Steak house is a true diamond in the rough. As I told someone just yesterday; “It’s nearly impossible to get a good steak in England without needing a mortgage” so believe me, it’s worth travelling a decent distance to get to, although I’m super lucky that it’s practically right on my doorstep (Just the other side of Ripley). The place looks big but not over the top. In fact, there are no signs on the outside that make mention to the place as a steak house. Even when you walk inside it just looks like a large country pub with the obligatory brass ornaments hanging over the bar and the old wooden furniture. To get to the restaurant you go through to the back room which is a dedicated dining room. Despite being cozy, the place still looks very old fashioned and unimpressive.

The menu is printed on a single side of A4 but on closer inspection the place begins to reveal what a gem it really is. There is no messing about. There are a handfull of starters, pretty old fashioned like smoked mackerel and prawn cocktail but they’re very reasonably priced. Then on to mains. Now, although there are a couple of other dished (a lesagne and chicken chasseur) this place is called “steak house” for a reason. On offer there is Sirloin (8oz or 16oz), a 20oz T-Bone, and Rump (12oz or 24oz) They also have certain nights of the week where a monster 32oz Rump is available! All are served with chips or jacket potato, peas and salad. Prices may make you go “What? that can’t be right!?” these are some cheap steaks! The 24oz rump I ordered was £10.95 which when you consider just how much you’re getting is astonishing. Nat has the 8oz sirloin which was still an incredible deal at £6.75. It’s not all about quantity though. A steak is only worth it’s money if it’s done right and believe me, the chef here knows what he’s doing! I ordered my steak medium-rare and it came out just perfect; tender and juicy like in the picture (Steak in the picture is not the one I had last night). Nat ordered her’s medium-well and from what i saw, they nailed that too. I will say that in my experience they do tend to ever-so-slightly under cook the steaks so if, like me, you like a steak rare, I’d suggest you ask for it medium-rare at Denby Lodge as rare would be closer to blue.

As if my half cow wasn’t enough, I turned my attention to the deserts menu. There are actually 2 deserts menus; one with ice cream sundaes and another with cakes. I’ve had items from both in the past and they have been excellent. This time though, I went for ice cream and so did Nat. I had a summer fruits sundae which was just perfect following a large steak as the tart berries were a real palette cleanser. Nat had the sundae called Dark Temptation which, as the name suggests, is a chocolate sundae. It also has banana in it and two wafer straw type things. It, too was excellent.

As I’ve already pointed out, the prices are amazing. We had: 1 24oz rump, 1 8oz sirloin, 1 side of onion rings and 2 ice cream sundaes and the bill came to £25.45.

Honestly, I don’t know why it was over a year between visits. I shall definitely make sure that this doesn’t happen again. If you want to check the place out for yourself just enter the postcode: DE5 8PH into your sat nav or Google maps… unless you have your steak well done. If you do, then you don’t deserve to eat it. That is all.

Hi people… lots to share this time. Had a 4 day weekend to be out and about. Friday Myself and Nat took a trip to Nottingham to have some lunch and walk around the shops a bit. We went to Wagamama for lunch, if you’ve never been, go. It’s fantastic. I had the signature Wagamama Ramen and Nat had a rice dish with chicken, vegetables and oyster sauce. We shared a serving of gyoza, Japanese dumplings with chicken and spring onion which are steamed and finished on a grill. Whenever I eat there I always leave with a sense of well-being and content… soul food ftw!

Our journey to Notts wasn’t just for food and shops. The previous week I heard about the Carbon & Chemicals exhibit being in the city for a week starting Good Friday so was determined to check that out. Basically it’s an exhibition of skateboard art and other media put on by Xynthetic, a family of artists brought together by a love of skateboarding. I’d been emailing Gavin Strange (JamFactory) about it over the past week and was pretty psyched. Anyway, we got there about half an hour after it opened and grabbed a goodie bag with all kinds of stickers and posters and badges and had a look around the art and photos. Met Gav (all-round nice guy) and had a bit of a chat before stopping to watch the live art take place. Shot loads of piccies of the event. The music was cool, DJ and friend of Xynthetic, 209 layed down beats all night. Didn’t stay for the whole time and only saw the live art about a quarter finished but you can see the finished article here. You can read about the goings on at JamFactory blog and the Xynthetic blog.

Saturday, Brahn and Laura came round having just been into Derby. Dan had bought a remote control helicopter which was the shizz! After some practice I was able to control it to some extent but it was still kinda unpredictable. Either way, we flew it around for an hour or so before heading into Alfreton for a drink at ‘spoons and grabbed a curry before heading back to mine. After consuming a silly amount of chicken dupiaza we were in the mood for flying the chopper again so we did that for a good while more… I also took some pictures of the beast flying around.

See the whole Gallery of those two days.

Sunday was a super lazy day, as all Sundays should be. I stayed in bed watching X Files until mid afternoon. Went to get some late lunch and then got ready to go out. Went to Nat’s dad’s house for some food and drink. It was cool, her brothers came round and we had a bit of a laugh.

Monday, I met Brahn and Laura at Brahn’s house and we had a bit of a play with the chopper again. After that we headed into Derby for some lunch. We went to Pierre Bistro on Friar Gate for the set lunch menu. They do 3 courses for a tenner and it’s good eatin too! I had Brioche with mushrooms to start, then salmon fillet with mussels and sticky toffee pudding for dessert! Was outstanding, I recommend it to anyone who likes European food. We shared a bottle of the house red as well and the lunch offer combined with Laura’s student discount meant that the bill only came to a bit over £35 for the three of us. After that we headed into Westfield for a bit of a walk around before heading back to Brahn’s for some more helicopter action. At about 6 I headed over to Nat’s house. I had some dinner and played with her new dog, Millie; a Jack Russel puppy. It’s a right hyper little shit. Her other dog, Barney was having a fit… he’s the most jealous attention seeking dog ever! After that we just chilled and watched Meet the Parents before I had to head home.

All in all was a nice Easter, enough stuff to do without me lacking relaxation. Shockingly, no trips to the movies over the weekend… I think I’m going to check out The Orphanage on Wednesday as Lucyfer has recommended it to me. Roll on May when the good stuff comes out! Laaaavly!
